The Lumineers & Foals Notch Rock Airplay No. 1s
The Lumineers rule Adult Alternative Songs with "Ophelia," while Foals top Alternative Songs with "Mountain at My Gates."
In addition to Disturbed‘s new No. 1 “The Sound of Silence” on Billboard‘s Mainstream Rock Songs chart (dated March 19), two other bands ascend to the tops of other rock radio airplay rankings.
The Lumineers rule Adult Alternative Songs, as “Ophelia” rises 2-1, reaching the top in just its fourth week with a 9 percent gain in plays, according to Nielsen Music. The folk-rockers previously led with “Ho Hey” (2012) and “Stubborn Love” (2013), both from their eponymous debut album, for eight weeks each. (Those tracks took 11 and 12 weeks, respectively, to reach the summit.)
“Ophelia” also jumps 15-12 on Alternative Songs and 13-12 on Rock Airplay (5 million in audience, up 10 percent). The song is the first single from the band’s sophomore album Cleopatra, due April 8.
Meanwhile, Foals rise 3-1 on Alternative Songs (up 4 percent in plays) with “Mountain at My Gates,” the English band’s first airplay chart leader. The track reaches the apex in its 32nd week, tying for the second-longest climb to No. 1 in the chart’s history, which began in 1988. Fitz & the Tantrums traversed a 33-week path to the top with “Out of My League” in 2013, while Neon Trees’ “Animal” also reached No. 1 in its 32nd week in 2010.
Previously, Foals’ best Alternative Songs peak was No. 20, with two entries in 2013: “Inhaler” and “My Number.” The group’s new leader bullets on all four Billboard rock airplay charts this week: at No. 5 on Rock Airplay (8 million, up 11 percent), No. 14 on Adult Alternative Songs and No. 33 on Mainstream Rock Songs.
