New year, new beginnings. At least for Tiffany Young, whose newly-released “Born Again” (out today, Jan. 25) is an anthem about her personal revival after enduring longterm struggles. Young also revealed that her upcoming Lips on Lips EP is set to drop on Feb. 22; it will be accompanied by an already-planned tour of the same name.
Young’s lush new pop song explores her reorientation of her sense of self on both personal and career levels, following her Stateside shift after over a decade in the K-pop world as a member of Girls’ Generation. “So bad it should be forbidden. So good, so deep, I feel it. I’m reborn,” she sings over a soaring melody. “Your love is like a higher power. I’m born, I’m born, I’m born again, again.”
At first glance, it’s a love song about being revitalized by a relationship, but in a press release, the singer expressed that the track’s release marks a “very emotional and personal journey inspired by all the tragedy and pain I’ve had to mask with a smile throughout my career,” referring to her early career as part of one of the world’s most popular, and busy, girl groups, and difficulties relating to her father’s outstanding debts.
Young is one of several stars associated with the South Korean entertainment industry to recently be embroiled in what has become colloquially known as “Debt Too,” a movement where celebrities are being taken to task for debts owed by family members. (Young issued a statement on the matter in December.)
The track was written by Fernando Garibay, and is Young’s fourth English-language song since transitioning into the U.S. market last year after departing with former agency SM Entertainment in 2017.
“Born Again” was released alongside a video shot on the beach. The 29-year-old appears as a modern-day goddess, awash in waves, tulle, and satin.
The singer also took to social media to reveal that she has “a special surprise” planned for Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14).
