A full version of Prince and Zooey Deschanel’s New Girl duet was released on Friday, via the social media accounts of his “funk ‘n’ roll” band, 3RDEYEGIRL.
The track went to iTunes and all digital retailers via an agreement with Epic Records and L.A. Reid, the first time the veteran executive and Prince have teamed up on a release. The singlewas also serviced to various radio formats, including Top 40, Rhythm and Hot A/C, where it will be worked by the Epic promotion team.
Prince Plays for Laughs on Post-Super Bowl Episode of ‘New Girl’
The two first performed “FALLINLOVE2NITE” during the post-Super Bowl episode of Deschanel’s Fox comedy, which became the top-rated Big Four scripted telecast in three years, averaging 25.8 million viewers and an 11.1 rating among adults 18-49.
The Purple One’s guest role resulted after Prince reached out to the New Girl producers earlier this season, since they first tried to recruit him for a cameo in 2013. “He said, ‘I’m a big fan. I’d love to do the show at some point in the future,'”said New Girl creator Liz Meriwether, who has never featured Deschanel’s singing on the show (outside of the theme song). “That was also definitely about trying to figure out what was within the world of the show, but it was just so fun to watch and shoot. We just felt, again, it was one of those moments where we’re like, ‘Well, let’s just go for it.’ I think we can come back from this without losing all of our integrity. Basically, it’s just awesome to see.”
