As an editor at large, Robert Levine writes the Billboard “Follow the Money” column about the underlying structure and economics of the music business. He also covers copyright issues, the German music business and dozens of organizations with initials for names. He was deputy editorial director of Billboard from 2019 to 2023. He is also the author of the 2011 book ‘Free Ride,’ which the New York Times Book Review called “a book that should change the debate about the future of culture.” The book, his first, was also praised by Businessweek, Fortune and Financial Times. He has also edited features and cover stories at Wired and New York, plus contributed to Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone and The New York Times, as well as Die Zeit in Germany. He has spoken about copyright and technology in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Spain and Italy. He lives in Berlin and has seen Bob Dylan at least 40 times.
