Mexican American rapper Robby Antonio Zumaya, better known by his stage alias Rob.B, is carving his own path in the hip-hop scene. His latest single “What’s Your Lyfe Lyke” takes the unapologetic swagger of the Tygas and Drakes of the world and filters it through a queer lens.
“Queer people are so multidimensional, but often times we unwillingly get sorted into these preconceived stereotypes that make straight people feel safe,” Zumaya tells Billboard. “I feel that right now, queer artists are getting the opportunity that our heterosexual counterparts so often take for granted, so having the chance to show the hip-hop community that gay men can and will show you how to stunt, all while showcasing what I contribute to the spectrum of queer representation in such an unfiltered in-your-face approach, makes it almost impossible to ignore.”

For the “What’s Your Lyfe Lyke” video, premiering today, Rob.B finds himself emersed in uber-saturated scenes designed to reflect the “bold, brash and unapologetically queer” nature of his lyrics. Keeping on brand, Zumaya, clad only in socks, briefs and a snapback, delivers lines as he rides a giant purple eggplant in the video’s pinnacle.
“I’m very sex-forward with my music and my image and I’m not one to shy away from acknowledging that,” Zumaya explains. “I thought it would be a cheeky way to nod at the lyrics ‘fuck who I want to’ without being overtly literal. And well — who wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to ride a huge eggplant?”
