The promo for the kick-off of Saturday Night Live‘s 47th season had a decidedly Lone Star vibe to it. Between Golden, Texas native musical guest Kacey Musgraves and Dallas-born host Owen Wilson there was more “everything is bigger” energy than cast member Kenan Thompson could shake a stick at.
“Hey, I’m Owen Wilson and I’m hosting the season premiere of SNL with musical guest Kacey Musgraves,” Wilson said of this weekend’s (Oct. 2) first show, with the Star-Crossed singer proudly adding, “fellow Texan.” That was all 18-season vet Thompson needed to bust out all the bighorn clichés he knows. “Is everything really bigger in Texas? Like, are the burgers huge?,” he asked.
Well, funny story, Wilson responded, it just depends on who’s making them. “I make them about the size of my fist,” Musgraves explained, holding up her closed hand to demonstrate. “I’m not going to your barbecue,” Thompson said definitively.
In the second bit, Wilson introduced Musgraves and Thompson requested that she play them a little something. “I don’t have my guitar,” she pleaded. “That’s all right you can just slap our little bellies,” Wilson kindly offered. “I don’t think that’s gonna work,” Musgraves winced.
Musgraves made her SNL debut in 2018 around the time her highly acclaimed Golden Hour album was released. Kim Kardashian will host the following weekend on Oct. 9, accompanied by musical guest Halsey, who performed songs from her third album Manic last year during the first 2020 episode of NBC’s late-night sketch comedy series.
Rami Malek will host the Oct. 16 episode along with Young Thug, who will make his proper debut as a musical guest debut after he joined Megan Thee Stallion onstage to perform their “Don’t Stop” collab last year. And to close out the month, Emmy-winning Ted Lasso actor Jason Sudeikis will host the show and Brandi Carlile will perform as the musical guest.
