Jonathan Van Ness stopped to chat with Billboard’s Jordyn Rolling on the red carpet at the 2019 MTV Video Music Awards on Monday (Aug. 26), discussing what it was like working with Taylor Swift on her “You Need to Calm Down” music video and sharing his thoughts on her latest album Lover.
Asked what it was like to be a part of Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” video, Van Ness told Billboard that it was “very surreal” but “really cool.”
His favorite moment on set was when he turned around during some downtime and Swift was just standing next to him. “I turned around and Taylor was just like next to me and I was like, ‘Hi.’ And now we’re friends! It’s just really great,” he shared.
Speaking of their friendship, the Queer Eye Fab Five member revealed that he and the pop star were texting with each other on his way to the VMAs. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I think I’m presenting an award that you’re nominated in, I hope I get to hug you,’” he said. “And then I was like, ‘But I want to see you afterwards.’ So that was our chat!”
As for what he thinks of Lover, Van Ness confessed, “I have not turned it off,” naming “Death by a Thousand Cuts” and “Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince” as a few of his favorite tracks so far.
