It was perhaps inevitable that Charlotte Ronson would become renown for something creative. Sister of producer/musician Mark Ronson and DJ Samantha Ronson and stepdaughter of Foreigner‘s Mick Jones, celebrated London-born, New York-bred designer Charlotte made a big name for herself in womenswear over the last decade-plus dressing young Hollywood and stylish musical women like Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Lily Allen.

“When Rihanna was on the cover of GQ, she was wearing one of my bodysuits,” Ronson remembered with relish as she spoke with The Hook in her New York workspace for this installment of Behind The Seams. “I always think she has the perfect balance and it’s so her own style and look that it’s awesome to see.”
Nicki Minaj, Ronson says, stepped out in a pair of high-waisted shorts from her fall collection. “She definitely made it her own.” Natural fabrics, plus “finding a certain pattern, color story or mood” are all part of Ronson’s creative process.

But Ronson also finds her muse, as you might expect, among her kin. As is befitting twins, Charlotte thinks that working with sister Samantha a particularly perfect collaboration. “She’ll come in for soundcheck two nights before [my show] and then she’ll go into the studio and start putting the songs together. My stylist might have her own ideas, so [there’s] that battle of the two. Samantha always wins, but she’s always right too,” Charlotte explains, adding that the pair often hand out mixes of the music played at her runway shows (“plus, if there’s time. . . a few other songs that speak to the current collection”) after each one.
“I feel lucky to have been surrounded by so many musical and artistic people in my life,” she says.
