To say the video for DJ White Shadow’s new song “Fear” is intense would be an understatement. The clip seeks to skewer the images of violence that constitute our cultural notion of fear, so there is a great deal of filmic violence. Then there are some puppies and old people dancing. It’s quite a jump, but it accompanies the music well with its agitating trap beat and schizo sampling. The track is taken from the forthcoming “Pussy Drugs Fear” EP, out on July 23 through Decon Records, preceding two more releases expected this year from White Shadow in a three-part EP trilogy.
In addition to working on his own material, Chicago-based DJ White Shadow (born Paul Blair) has also been working with Lady Gaga on her much-ballyhooed next album “ARTPOP.” The singer had previously enlisted him to work on 2011’s “Born This Way.” He co-wrote and co-produced most of the album’s songs, including “Edge of Glory” and the title track. Through his work on the album, Blair earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year.
While we don’t know if Gaga will be going trap in her new material, it’s safe to say White Shadow’s “Fear” video is the kind of shocking high-concept video art Mother Monster would approve of.
