Multi-instrumentalist Andrew Dost told Billboard during a break at Lollapalooza that the band wanted on-screen media, including TV classic “Cheers” and a pair of Stanley Kubrick films, to “seep into the music” while recording their breakout album “Some Nights.”
“We would have movies on mute going up on a giant TV in the studio pertaining to which song we were working on,” Dost says. “So for the ‘Some Nights’ intro, which is a little more theatrical, we had ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ and ‘The Shining’ playing.”

For “We Are Young,” which spent six weeks atop the Hot 100 this year, the NYC-based Indie pop band were thinking “Cheers” and “Barfly,” a 1987 film about poet Charles Bukowski, starring Mickey Rourke.
“So, we want these images to seep into the music somehow anyway, so there’s always a visual and musical exchange happening,” he said.
