Funk/rap duo the Coup will crown a new deal with Epitaph with the April 25 release of its fifth studio album, “Pick a Bigger Weapon.” The 17-track set features guest appearances from Talib Kweli, the Roots’ Black Thought and punk icon Jello Biafra, among others.
The Coup’s last album, 2001’s “Party Music,” was released shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Its original cover art was changed because of its depiction of an explosion at World Trade Center.
“As far as the record industry was concerned, it was the end of my career,” says lead rapper/producer Boots of the incident. “I always think my next album is gonna be my last, like it may not sell and I’ll have to do something else. So it drives me to make an album that people might remember as the best one I did.”
