The truth is out. On Thursday (Sept. 13) during the Australian morning show The Kyle & Jackie O Show, the hosts realized that we have all been saying Ariana Grande‘s name wrong.
Host Jackie O of the morning radio show expressed that she learned about the mistake after watching Grande’s recent interview with Beats 1. The singer was asked if she was going to hyphenate her last name to Grande-Davidson when she gets married, and what would happen to her professional name.
Grande admitted that she would hyphenate her name, but wasn’t sure about changing her professional title, and even hinted at wanting to drop her last name and go by just “Ariana.” The “No Tears Left To Cry” singer then began talking about her grandfather, who was very proud of their last name Grande, which she pronounced as “Grand-y.”
Grande’s brother previously confirmed that the original pronunciation of their family name was changed in an interview with Billboard. “So when I joined Actor’s Equity, I didn’t want my name to be Frankie Grand-y,” he explained. “I just didn’t like that it rhymed, and I was like, ‘I’m gonna go back to out Italian roots and I’m gonna pull out Grande,’ and then when I started doing it, my grandfather started doing it, and then everyone started doing it.”
Trending on Billboard
After the segment on the Australian radio show went viral, model and activist Chrissy Teigen chimed in about her own name in a Twitter post, saying that she “gave up a long time ago. last name is tie-gen not tee-gan.” Fans then wondered why Teigen herself mispronounced her name like everyone else.
“I know. I even correct people when they say it correctly. it’s all v effed up,” she added. “I don’t correct people, ever. They can call me Janet and I won’t. Wrong order? I’ll eat it. Taxi going to the wrong airport? I’ll change my flight.”
The mom of two then shared a helpful video of herself pronouncing the name correctly for anyone in need of a tutorial.
