A little more than a month ahead of their On The Run summer stadium tour, Jay Z and Beyonce have unexpectedly released a Bonnie and Clyde-style mini-movie featuring A-list actors Sean Penn and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Beyonce, Jay Z Announce On The Run Summer Stadium Tour
Directed by Melina Matsoukas, (who directed Beyonce’s “Pretty Hurts” from her “Beyonce” visual album) the nearly four-minute trailer, titled “Run,” features everything you might expect from a summer blockbuster action film: car chases, explosions, gunfire and passionate love. But the clip — which also stars Jay Z and Beyonce, as well as cameos by Don Cheadle, Guillermo Díaz, Emmy Rossum, Blake Lively, Rashida Jones and Kidada Jones — won’t be hitting theaters anytime soon.
Toward the end, the words “Coming Never” flash on the screen, likely indicating that the mini-movie is a promotional video for Jay Z and Beyonce’s upcoming summer tour, which begins June 25 at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. Overheard during the clip are snippets from the song “Part II (On The Run),” from Jay Z’s latest album, “Magna Carta…Holy Grail.”
Interestingly, and perhaps coincidentally, in one scene the video’s stars Jay Z and Beyonce emerge from an elevator clad in balaclava masks and Hova holding a gun seemingly about to commit a crime. The scene could be a sly reference to a more notorious video that blew up the Internet last week showing Solange Knowles physically attacking Jay Z in an elevator at New York’s Standard Hotel.
The clip opens with a fake MPAA rating screen which gives the profanity-filled spot an “R” rating next to the words Roc Nation, Jay Z’s music and management concern. The approval is given by the “Motion Picture Association of Brooklyn.”
Even though “Run” won’t be making it to the silver screen, the highly entertaining and well produced promotional clip should keep fans satisfied until the Carters hit the live stage this summer.
