Chance the Rapper Heading for ‘Big Day’ on Billboard 200 Chart With His Possible First No. 1 Album

Chance the Rapper is aiming for his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart with his latest release, "The Big Day."

Chance the Rapper is aiming for his first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart with his latest release, The Big Day. Self-released by the artist on July 26, industry forecasters expect the album to top next week’s tally with perhaps more than 110,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Aug. 1.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The top 10 of the Aug. 10-dated Billboard 200 chart (where The Big Day may start at No. 1) is scheduled to be revealed on Billboard’s websites on Sunday, Aug. 4.

The Big Day is Chance the Rapper’s first studio album, after previously releasing three solo mixtapes (10 Day in 2012; Acid Rap, 2013; and Coloring Book, 2016). Chance made chart history in 2016 when Coloring Book debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 (dated June 4, 2016), becoming the first streaming-exclusive album to ever chart on the list.

Earlier in 2019, Chance gave 10 Day and Acid Rap their streaming and retail debuts, while also granting Coloring Book its first retail release. In turn, on the Billboard 200 dated July 13, Acid Rap bowed at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, 10 Day debuted at No. 73, and Coloring Book re-entered at No. 46.

As for The Big Day, the set’s first-week number will be encouraged by an array of merchandise/album bundles the artist is selling via his official website, along with an offer for an album bundled with an access code to the pre-sale for his upcoming concert tour. In addition, streaming numbers for the album should figure to be robust. (Not counting in The Big Day‘s numbers: the gifted downloads of the album offered by Lyft via its app.)

Heading for a No. 2 entry on next week’s Billboard 200 is NF’s new album The Search. Sources suggest the set could launch with around 95,000 units, with some of that figure goosed by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer, as well as some merchandise/album bundles sold through the hip-hop artist’s website. NF’s last album, Perception, debuted at No. 1 on the Oct. 28, 2017-dated list — marking his first leader — and started with 55,000 equivalent album units earned in its first week (according to Nielsen Music).

Other albums on track for likely top 20 debuts include: Key Glock and Young Dolph’s Dum and Dummer, Of Monsters and Men’s Fever Dream and Justin Moore’s Late Nights and Longnecks.
