The Social 50 is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Wikipedia. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers with artist page views and engagement. The chart’s latest tracking week ended July 9.
Italian composer Morricone leads the pair by entering at No. 9. In the tracking week ending July 9, Morricone’s Wikipedia page saw 740,000 hits, a leap of 7,959%, according to Next Big Sound.
Additionally, Morricone’s catalog received 2.9 million on-demand streams in the streaming tracking week ending July 9, up 267%, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. Leading the way: his theme to 1966 film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (“Il Buono, il Brutto, il Cattivo”) with 201,000 on-demand streams.
Meanwhile, Daniels debuts at No. 12, the country singer racking up 222,000 Wikipedia views alongside 282,000 reactions to his Twitter posts and 189,000 mentions on the social media website. Like Morricone, Daniels’ music – solo and with the Charlie Daniels Band – saw significant gains in the streaming tracking week. Charlie Daniels Band’s discography earned 6.2 million on-demand streams, up 191%, while his solo material racked up 3.9 million, up 204%.
Morricone died at age 91 in Italy from injuries after a fall, while Daniels was 83 when he died of a stroke.
