Joanna Newsom Makes a Splash Atop Alternative & Folk Albums Charts
The folk singer scores her first No. 1 on Billboard's Alternative Albums chart with fourth album 'Divers.'
Joanna Newsom notches her first No. 1 on Billboard‘s Alternative Albums chart (dated Nov. 14) as Divers, her fourth LP and first in five years, launches with 14,000 sold, according to Nielsen Music. The California native also logs her best sales week, topping the debut frame of 2006’s Ys (9,000).
The new LP additionally debuts atop Folk Albums, marking her second leader on the list, following 2010’s Have One on Me, and grants her a new best peak (No. 30) on the Billboard 200 (her previous best: No. 75, also with Have One on Me).

Divers is also a No. 2-opener on Vinyl Albums, with 3,000 LPs sold. It follows only Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, which arrives at No. 1 with 4,000 vinyl copies sold in its first week available in the format.
Newsom is the only debut in the Alternative Albums chart’s top 10. The next-best bow belongs to Fuzz, the California garage rock outfit that starts at No. 22 with II (2,000 sold). II also debuts at No. 11 on Hard Rock Albums, No. 30 on Top Rock Albums and notches a No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseeker Albums chart.
