Kings of Leon Cancel Shows, Fly Home to Be With Ailing Mother

Kings of Leon canceled a pair of shows after revealing that they were flying home to be with their ailing mother.

Kings of Leon have flown home to be by their ailing mother’s side. The group — fronted by brothers Caleb, Jared and Nathan Followill — informed fans on Thursday (Sept. 23) that they would be unable to perform their planned show that night at Shoreline Amphitheatre in San Francisco in order to spend time with their mother, Betty-Ann.

“Our mother, who many of our fans know and love, has been dealing with a medical crisis for the last several weeks and while it has been hard to take the stage each night, it has been the love and energy from you, our fans, that has gotten us through,” they wrote in a letter to fans. “Just before taking the stage at The Forum we learned she took a turn for the worse. It was a hard show to get through, but you held us up that night in a way we will never forget.”

The note, signed by the siblings, reveals that just after their Tuesday night show at the Forum in Los Angeles they all flew home, “where we will remain by her side until the time comes to say goodbye.”

In addition to dropping the Shoreline date, the band will also miss their planned headlining slot at tonight’s (Sept. 24) kick-off of the Ohana Fest in Dana Point, California. They ended their message by thanking fans for their support and fest organizers Pearl Jam for their support during a difficult time.

PJ shared their sympathies, tweeting, “On behalf of Ohana Fest, we extend our deepest love & support to Caleb, Nathan, Jared, Matthew & the entire Followill & Kings of Leon family. Our hearts are with you. In their absence, My Morning Jacket will play an extended set followed by a special appearance by Eddie Vedder.”
