The veteran British band’s first studio album in more than a decade opens at the top of the ARIA Albums Chart. Blue & Lonesome is their first stint atop the sales chart since Voodoo Lounge reached the summit for a week back in 1994 and the Hall of Famers’ first studio LP since 2005’s A Bigger Bang.
The Stones now boast 25 cumulative weeks in the top spot over a 52-year recording career which includes Australian No. 1s with The Rolling Stones (3 weeks, 1965), Their Satanic Majesties Request (3 weeks, 1968), Sticky Fingers (2 weeks, 1971), Goats Head Soup (4 weeks, 1973) and Tattoo You (11 weeks, 1981).
The blues covers album is also No. 1 in the U.K. (its 12th chart-topper there) and opens at No. 4 in the U.S., where it becomes the band’s 37th top 10.
Michael Buble’s holidays classic Christmas (Reprise/Warner) rises 3-2 in its 49th week on the Australian chart; Metallica’s Hardwired…To Self-Destruct (Virgin/EMI) slips one spot to No. 3; John Farnham & Olivia Newton-John’s Friends For Christmas (Sony) holds at No. 4 and Adele’s juggernaut 25 (XL/Inertia) rises 6-5.
Homegrown country hero Keith Urban sees Ripcord (Capitol/EMI) return to the top 10 as his arena tour winds its way across the country. The former No. 1 album rebounds 17-7. Childish Gambino earns his highest chart position in Australia with the rapper’s third album Awaken, My Love! (Liberation/Universal). It’s new at No. 9.
This week’s ARIA Singles Chart is led for a second week by Clean Bandit’s “Rockabye” (EastWest/Warner Music) featuring Sean Paul & Anne-Marie. The British trio’s hit has enjoyed a four-week stay at the top of the U.K. chart.
The entire top seven remains unchanged in a slow week for new releases. The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk’s “Starboy” (Republic/Universal) is at No. 2 (and retains the Streaming Singles title); Rae Sremmurd’s “Black Beatles” (Interscope/Universal) is at No. 3; James Arthur’s “Say You Won’t Let Go” (Columbia/Sony) is No. 4 and Neiked’s “Sexual” (Polydor/Universal) holds at No. 5.
