Tame Impala’s ‘Currents’ Tops Inaugural U.K. Prog Rock Chart

Tame Impala’s Currents has topped the U.K.’s first-ever prog albums chart.
The third album from Kevin Parker’s Australian alternative rock outfit held off the challenge of Muse’s Drones to lead the inaugural Official Progressive Albums Chart, a monthly list which launched this week as a partnership between Official Charts Company and Prog Magazine.

Rounding out the top five were albums by Roger Waters (Amused to Death at No. 3), Joe Satriani (Shockwave Supernova at No. 4) and Public Service Broadcasting (The Race for Space at No. 5).
The chart is based on physical and digital sales and audio streaming data and is collected by the OCC, which also publishes the market’s singles and albums charts. Recordings eligible for the new prog chart have been defined by the “prog rock experts” at Prog Magazine, which will host the chart in its pages (the chart is also published at the OCC’s Website).

Publication of the new chart coincides with the Progressive Music Awards, held Thursday in London. Steven Wilson, who fronts Porcupine Tree, was the big winner taking out three categories (album of the year, commercial breakthrough and box set design), while Swedish metal specialists Opeth won for best band and Genesis keyboard player Tony Banks was honored with the Prog God title.
