The xx Renew Worldwide Deal With Universal Music Publishing Group

U.K. indie-pop band The xx have renewed their worldwide publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group, the company announced Tuesday (Sept. 24).

Since signing to UMPG a decade ago, The xx — which consists of Romy Madley Craft, Jamie xx and Oliver Sim — have risen to international prominence and released three albums, including their Mercury Award-winning debut, xx, and 2017’s I See You, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. The band’s music has also been featured in a number of films, TV series and video games including Gossip Girl, House of Cards, FIFA 2018 and Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby.

“We originally signed The xx purely on the basis of a set of songs we heard and loved,” said UMPG vp international A&R and director of A&R Mark Gale in a statement. “It’s been extraordinary to see the artist and individuals that they’ve evolved into. They are constantly looking forward and challenging themselves creatively. It’s a huge privilege and compliment that after 10 years they continue to trust all of us at Universal Music Publishing with their songs.”

In addition to a successful recording career, The xx have become a regular presence at major festivals, including headlining spots at All Tomorrow’s Parties, Coachella, Glastonbury, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza. In 2016, their residency at O2 Academy Brixton resulted in the longest run of sold-out shows in the venue’s history.

In addition to their work as a band, Croft and Jamie xx have enjoyed success individually, with the latter’s debut solo album In Colour receiving nominations for the 2015 Mercury Prize, best British album at the 2015 BRITs and best dance/electronic album at the 2016 Grammys. Meanwhile, Croft co-wrote the track “Electricity” by Silk City featuring Dua Lipa, which won best dance recording at this year’s Grammys.
