Nate Smith reveals his favorite Northern California slang at the Billboard Country Live event.

Nate Smith:
Hi, I’m Nate Smith, and here are some of my favorite Northern California slang words.

In Northern California, we say “hella.” Southern California doesn’t like that — they think it’s kind of silly, but we say “hella cool,” “hella this,” all that, so we say that all the time.

Another word we say is “sick” all the time. I don’t know if people say it over here in Tennessee, but we say “everything’s sick.” “Sick” is a good thing. If I say you are a “sick person,” man, just know that that’s a compliment from the bottom of my heart.

I say “rad,” “everything’s rad.” It’s an old-school term, like a skateboarder term from the ’80s, probably. I think “rad” is making a comeback.

And those are some of my favorite Northern California slang.
