Amity Affliction’s ‘Misery’ Roars to No. 1 on Australia’s Albums Chart

It’s an all-Australian double on the ARIA charts this week as Dean Lewis‘ “Be Alright” (Island) snags a third week atop the singles survey and The Amity Affliction’s Misery (Roadrunner/Warner) starts at the summit of the albums tally.
With Misery (Universal), the Queensland metalcore band claims a fourth consecutive No. 1 on the ARIA Albums Chart after Chasing Ghosts (2012), Let The Ocean Take Me (2014) and This Could Be Heartbreak (2016).
The Gympie outfit’s four-in-a-row chart feat is a rare one which has been previously achieved by Silverchair, Hilltop Hoods and Powderfinger.
Recorded earlier this year in Baltimore with producer Matt Squire (Panic! At The Disco, Ariana Grande, Underoath), Misery is the trio’s sixth studio set. And it’s the eighth homegrown album to rule the ARIA Albums Chart in 2018.
Misery nudges Ariana Grande’s Sweetener into second place, while Drake’s Scorpion (Republic/Universal) rises 4-3, Human Nature’s covers collection Romance of the Jukebox (Sony) dips 2-4 and Ed Sheeran’s diamond-certified (500,000 units) blockbuster Divide (Warner) improves 7-5.
K-pop group superstars BTS grab a third top ten entry on the ARIA Albums Chart with Love Yourself: Answer (BigHit Entertainment/Orchard), new at No. 7. The compilation, which bows at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, gathers new recordings with tracks from Love Yourself: Her (No. 8 on the ARIA Albums Chart in September 2017) and Love Yourself: Tear (No. 6, May 2018). One of those new songs, “Idol,” starts at No. 35 on this week’s national singles chart.
ARIA Hall of Famer John Williamson earns a top 20 debut with his 20th studio album, Butcherbird (Warner), the country legend’s first set of originals in four years. Butcherbird flies in at No. 13.
Meanwhile, Alice In Chains enjoy a No. 15 start with Rainier Fog (BMG/Warner), the veteran U.S. rockers’ sixth album and first in five years, while New Zealand father-and-son duo Neil & Liam Finn just miss out on a top 20 berth with Lightsleeper (Inertia), their first collaborative recording. Lightsleeper is new at No. 21.
On the ARIA Singles Chart, Dean Lewis’ platinum certified “Be Alright” rules once more as Benny Blanco’s “Eastside” (Interscope/Universal) featuring Halsey & Khalid, the No. 1 single in the U.K. right now, holds at No. 2.
It’s a different story on the ARIA Streaming Singles survey, which sees “Eastside” at No. 1 and “Be Alright” at No. 2.
Another U.K. hit makes a notable climb in Australia this week, as George Ezra’s “Shotgun” (Columbia/Sony) fires 9-6 on the ARIA Singles Chart, a new peak. “Shotgun” now sits just one spot below Ezra’s all-time chart best, a No. 5 for “Budapest” back in August 2014.
